What is the Robots.txt Generator?
The Robots.txt Generator helps website owners, SEO teams, developers, ecommerce sites, blogs, and web apps create crawler access rules in a safe and readable format.
Instead of only generating a plain file, this tool includes presets, sitemap directives, allow/disallow groups, existing robots.txt fetch, rule audit, and a URL tester so teams can verify important paths before publishing.
How to use the Robots.txt Generator
- Choose a preset such as SEO Safe, Ecommerce, Blog, or Web App.
- Enter your website URL, user-agent, allow paths, disallow paths, and sitemap URLs.
- Review the generated robots.txt output and rule audit warnings.
- Use URL Tester to check whether an important URL is allowed or blocked by the generated rules.
- Copy or download robots.txt and place it at the website root, such as https://example.com/robots.txt.
Why this robots.txt tool is better
- Smart presets for blogs, ecommerce, SEO tools, and private web app areas.
- Generate robots.txt with Sitemap, Allow, Disallow, User-agent, and optional Crawl-delay lines.
- Fetch an existing robots.txt file from a public site and audit its directives.
- Test a URL against generated rules before publishing.
- Copy or download output after one-time tool rating without repeatedly disturbing users.
Robots.txt Generator FAQ
What does robots.txt do?
A robots.txt file tells crawlers which URL paths they are allowed or not allowed to crawl. It is a crawl control file, not a security system.
Where should I place robots.txt?
Place robots.txt at the top-level root of the host, such as https://example.com/robots.txt. A robots.txt file in a subfolder is not the valid location for site-wide rules.
Can robots.txt block indexing?
Robots.txt blocks crawling. A disallowed URL may still be indexed if discovered from other links. Use noindex on pages you want to keep out of search results.
Should I block CSS and JavaScript?
Usually no. Search engines may need CSS and JavaScript to render and understand the page. Block assets only when you fully understand the impact.
Is Crawl-delay supported by Google?
Google does not support crawl-delay in robots.txt. Some other crawlers may use it, so this tool marks it as optional.
