What is an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is a community proposal for a concise Markdown file that helps language models and other automated readers find a site summary and important resources. The proposed structure starts with one H1 project name and a blockquote summary, may include additional context, and groups Markdown links under H2 sections. The reserved Optional section identifies lower-priority material.

Publishing this file does not guarantee discovery, citation, ingestion, ranking, or compliance by any AI system. It is not an authentication mechanism, legal agreement, robots.txt replacement, sitemap replacement, or reliable way to block model training. Use appropriate access controls, robots directives, and terms for those decisions.

How to build an llms.txt file

  1. Enter the site or project name, a short summary, the canonical website URL, and optional context that helps readers understand the resource collection.
  2. Add one resource per line using Label | absolute URL | optional description. Keep the most important resources in Primary, support and documentation links in Documentation, and lower-priority links in Optional.
  3. Review Resources and Validation for missing labels, invalid or non-HTTP URLs, HTTP warnings, duplicate destinations, missing required content, and an overly long summary.
  4. Confirm the final structure, compare the exact Markdown Preview, and use Copy LLMS.txt. The first copy uses the existing one-time rating flow; this workstation intentionally has no Download button.

Benefits of this LLMS.txt workflow

  • Follow the current community proposal’s readable H1, blockquote, context, H2 resource, and reserved Optional conventions without presenting them as an official web standard.
  • Organize primary, documentation, support, and optional resources with clear link labels and short descriptions.
  • Catch missing required fields, relative or unsupported URLs, insecure HTTP links, duplicate destinations, and long summaries before publishing.
  • Keep the live Preview and copied Markdown identical, with no hidden fields or invented crawling claims.
  • Use one reliable rating-gated Copy action instead of an unreliable Download flow.

LLMS.txt Generator FAQ

Is llms.txt an official web standard?

No. It is a community proposal. Implementations and adoption can change, and publishing the file does not require any model or crawler to use it.

Does llms.txt control AI crawling or model training?

Not reliably. Use authentication, authorization, robots.txt where applicable, contractual terms, and other access controls for enforceable decisions. The file is primarily a concise resource guide.

What structure does this generator use?

It creates one H1 project name, a blockquote summary, optional context, H2 resource sections with Markdown links and descriptions, an Optional section for lower-priority resources, and optional usage notes.

Should every site page be included?

Usually no. Prefer high-value canonical resources that help a reader understand the project. Large exhaustive URL collections are better handled by sitemaps and focused documentation indexes.

Why must resource URLs be absolute?

A standalone file is easier for different readers to interpret when each resource includes its complete HTTP or HTTPS destination. HTTPS is preferred when available.

Why is there no Download button?

The exact Markdown is available through one dependable Copy LLMS.txt action. The existing one-time rating gate runs before the first copy on that browser.

Does the tool fetch or validate live pages?

No. Validation is limited to the structure and URL strings you enter. It does not request the destination pages, check HTTP status, inspect robots directives, or confirm that a resource is publicly accessible.
