What is the Canonical URL Checker?
The Canonical URL Checker reviews canonical signals from data you supply. HTML Audit checks rel="canonical" placement and count, robots meta directives, the page title, URL validity, fragments, and the relationship between a page URL and its resolved canonical target.
URL Compare evaluates one page-to-canonical decision, while Bulk Map treats up to 100 mappings as a graph to expose chains and loops. Processing happens in the browser and does not crawl live pages, follow redirects, inspect HTTP Link or X-Robots-Tag headers, read sitemaps, or report the canonical ultimately selected by a search engine.
How to audit canonical URLs
- Choose HTML Audit for page source, URL Compare for one declared relationship, or Bulk Map for a list of page URL and canonical URL pairs.
- For HTML Audit, include the actual page URL when possible so relative canonicals can be resolved and self-reference can be checked.
- Review the live score, priority findings, extracted signals, and recommended fixes. Treat the score as a consistency check rather than a search ranking or indexing guarantee.
- In Bulk Map, correct invalid or duplicate source rows first, then replace chains with direct links to one final target and break every loop.
- Confirm the final report, then copy the canonical element, export the same current state as text, CSV, or JSON, or continue a valid single-page decision in Meta Tag Generator.
Benefits of this canonical checker
- Find missing, empty, multiple, conflicting, or out-of-head canonical link elements in pasted markup.
- Resolve relative targets against the supplied page URL and highlight fragments, tracking parameters, HTTPS downgrades, and cross-origin decisions.
- Check noindex and canonical combinations without claiming that one browser-side rule can predict a search engine's final selection.
- Audit up to 100 mappings together to detect duplicate sources, indirect chains, and circular canonical loops.
- Use one live audit state for the visual report, canonical snippet, copy action, and text, CSV, or JSON download.
Canonical URL Checker FAQ
Does this tool crawl the live page URL?
No. The checker analyzes pasted HTML and URLs in your browser. It does not fetch a page, follow redirects, or inspect HTTP response headers, robots.txt, sitemaps, or rendered JavaScript.
Can a clean score guarantee Google uses my declared canonical?
No. The score reports consistency in the supplied signals. Search engines evaluate additional signals and may select a different canonical.
Why does the tool flag URL fragments?
A fragment is not a reliable canonical target. Remove the #fragment and declare the fragment-free preferred URL.
What is a canonical chain?
A chain occurs when page A points to B and B points to C. Point A directly to the final preferred URL C to make the signal clearer.
What is a canonical loop?
A loop occurs when mappings eventually point back to a URL already in the same path, such as A to B and B to A. Choose one final canonical and point every duplicate directly to it.
Is a cross-domain canonical always an error?
No. It can be intentional, so the tool marks it for review. Confirm the pages are equivalent and that consolidation to the other origin is genuinely wanted.
Can I use noindex and rel="canonical" together?
They can coexist technically, but they express different indexing intentions. For duplicate consolidation, review whether a crawlable canonical signal better matches the goal.
How should bulk rows be formatted?
Enter one page URL and canonical URL per line separated by a pipe, tab, or comma. The checker processes up to 100 non-comment rows.
