What is the Alt Text Generator?
The Alt Text Generator helps writers create text alternatives according to the purpose of an image. It supports informative, product, functional, screenshot, decorative, and complex-image workflows because the correct alternative depends on what the image communicates or does in its page context.
The tool uses the subject, context, important detail, visible text, action, brand, and optional focus phrase that you enter. An uploaded JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF is used only for a local visual reference, filename, and dimensions. The rule-based generator does not claim to inspect image pixels with AI.
How to use the Alt Text Generator
- Optionally upload a raster image for a private browser preview, filename, and dimensions. Upload is not required.
- Choose the image purpose first. Informative images convey meaning, functional images describe an action, decorative images use alt="", and complex visuals need nearby detail.
- Enter the essential subject and page context, then add only the important detail, visible text, action, brand, or relevant focus phrase.
- Compare the generated drafts, select one, and edit it while the screen-reader intent preview, HTML, character count, and audit update.
- Generate the final state, review every warning in the real page context, then copy or download the exact alt text, image tag, or accessibility report.
Benefits of this alt text tool
- Choose the image purpose instead of applying one generic description pattern to every image.
- Generate up to eight context-aware drafts and edit the selected wording from the same state used by preview, audit, copy, and download.
- Preview an optional image locally without uploading it for rule-based generation.
- Catch empty non-decorative alternatives, redundant openings, filename artifacts, very long descriptions, repeated phrases, missing actions, vague screenshots, and missing complex-image detail.
- Export selected alt text, an escaped HTML image element with available dimensions, or a practical accessibility report.
Alt Text Generator FAQ
Does the tool automatically understand an uploaded image?
No. The optional image is a local visual reference. Drafts use the subject, purpose, context, details, and action you enter, so the wording must be checked against the actual image.
Should a decorative image have no alt attribute?
A decorative HTML image should still have an alt attribute, but its value should be empty: alt="". This signals assistive technology to skip it.
What should functional image alt text describe?
Describe the action or destination, such as Search products or Download report, rather than the icon shape or color.
Is 125 characters a WCAG limit?
No fixed character count automatically proves WCAG conformance. The audit uses practical length guidance and recommends moving complex detail into nearby content when needed.
Can the audit guarantee accessibility compliance?
No. It checks common wording risks, but a person must confirm the image purpose, accuracy, surrounding content, and complete user experience.
Is my uploaded image sent to a server?
The Pro workstation reads the optional image locally for preview, filename, and dimensions. Rule-based alt text generation does not require uploading the image.
