What does the PDF page-number tool do?

This tool places selectable page-number text over an existing PDF without turning its pages into images. Original text, vector graphics, links, page sizes, and page rotations remain in the document.

Choose all pages or a custom range, set the first displayed number, use Arabic or Roman numerals, and control format, position, font, size, colour, opacity, background, and margins. The visible preview is rendered by the same server logic used for download.

How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose or drop one readable PDF up to 32 MB. Enter its password if the document is protected.
  2. Number all pages, skip the cover, or enter a range such as 2-8, 11, 14-.
  3. Choose the first number, format, numeral style, position, font, colours, opacity, and margins.
  4. Move through the exact preview to check numbered and unnumbered pages.
  5. Select Add Page Numbers and download the finished PDF.

Flexible numbering without flattening the PDF

  • Keep source pages as PDF content instead of rebuilding them as screenshots.
  • Start at any supported number and increment only across the selected pages.
  • Use {n}, {page}, {total}, and {range_total} in a custom format.
  • Handle portrait, landscape, and rotated source pages with consistent visible placement.
  • Retain password protection when the source PDF is encrypted, or explicitly remove it from the new copy.

Add page numbers to PDF FAQ

Does the preview match the downloaded PDF?

Yes. Both use the same validated settings and page-overlay function. The preview is a render of the modified PDF page.

Can I leave the cover page unnumbered?

Yes. Choose Skip cover, or enter a range beginning at page 2. The first selected page receives the number set in First number.

What is the difference between {n} and {page}?

{n} is the displayed sequence that starts at your chosen first number. {page} is the physical page position in the PDF.

Are links and selectable text preserved?

Yes. Page numbers are added as a text overlay to the original PDF; the document is not rasterized.

Can I use Roman numerals?

Yes. Uppercase and lowercase Roman numerals are available for values from 1 to 3,999.

What happens to password protection?

Protected PDFs can retain their original encryption by default. You may switch that option off to create an unprotected output copy.
