What is the WebP Compressor?

The WebP Compressor reduces the file size of an existing WebP image while keeping the output in WebP format.

Quality mode gives direct control over lossy WebP quality. Target-size mode searches for the highest quality that can fit within the requested size. Lossless mode recompresses without lossy quality reduction.

The tool can preserve transparency and animated WebP frames. Preview and final download use the same Pillow WebP encoder and settings so the displayed compressed result matches the generated file.

How to compress a WebP image

  1. Choose or drag a WebP image up to 25 MB. Still and animated WebP files are supported within the safety limits.
  2. Choose Quality mode for direct visual-quality control, Target size to aim for a specific KB value, or Lossless to avoid lossy quality reduction.
  3. Choose Fast, Balanced, or Best Compression encoding effort. Higher effort can take longer.
  4. Keep Preserve Animation enabled when an animated WebP must retain all frames and timing.
  5. Choose whether ICC, EXIF, and XMP metadata should be preserved. Metadata is removed by default.
  6. Review the exact server-generated compressed preview, original and compressed sizes, savings, ratio, frame count, and warnings.
  7. Click Compress WebP, download the final WebP, or continue the generated result in another related image tool.

WebP Compressor benefits

  • Accepts actual WebP files only and validates the file content instead of trusting the filename.
  • Preserves transparent pixels and can keep animated WebP frames, duration, and loop behaviour.
  • Provides quality, target-size, and lossless compression modes without unrelated format-conversion controls.
  • Uses the same encoder for the preview and final output to prevent preview-versus-download differences.
  • Shows original size, compressed size, savings percentage, compression ratio, result mode, and frame count.
  • Can strip metadata for privacy and smaller files or preserve ICC, EXIF, and XMP when required.
  • Prevents stale downloads and next-tool links after compression settings change.
  • Carries the generated WebP directly into Resize, Crop, Watermark, WebP to JPG, or Image to PDF.

WebP Compressor FAQ

Does the tool accept JPG or PNG files?

No. This tool is dedicated to existing WebP files. Use the JPG to WebP or PNG to WebP converter when the source is another format.

Can it compress animated WebP images?

Yes. Preserve Animation keeps supported animated frames, timing, and loop behaviour. Safety limits apply to frame count and total frame pixels.

What does Target size mode do?

It performs several WebP encodes and keeps the highest tested quality that fits within the requested file size. Some images cannot reach an extremely small target without going below the minimum quality.

Does WebP transparency remain transparent?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are preserved in the WebP output.

What is Lossless mode?

Lossless mode avoids lossy pixel-quality reduction. The result can be larger than the original when the source was already efficiently encoded.

Why can the result be larger?

The original may already be highly optimized, or the selected lossless, metadata, or animation settings may require more bytes. The result panel reports this clearly.

Does the preview match the download?

Yes. Both are generated with the same server-side Pillow WebP encoder and selected settings.

Is metadata removed?

ICC, EXIF, and XMP metadata are removed by default. Enable Keep Metadata when those values must be preserved.

What are the processing limits?

The maximum file size is 25 MB, the maximum still-image resolution is 30 megapixels, and animated WebP files are limited by frame count and total frame pixels.
