What is the Favicon Generator?

The Favicon Generator turns one logo or a short initials fallback into the browser and app icons a modern website needs. It creates a multi-size favicon.ico, browser PNGs from 16 through 512 pixels, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon, Android Chrome icons, dedicated maskable PWA icons, a web app manifest, browserconfig XML, HTML link tags, and an installation README inside one ZIP.

Browser favicons, Apple home-screen icons, and maskable PWA icons do not have identical rendering requirements. The standard favicon follows the selected shape and transparency. The Apple touch output uses an opaque square base because iOS applies its own mask. Dedicated maskable icons use an opaque square and at least ten percent safe-zone padding, and the manifest declares those files with purpose maskable instead of incorrectly reusing an ordinary icon.

The live workstation checks the design at tiny browser-tab sizes, in a browser-tab mockup, as an Apple touch icon, and through a circular maskable preview. After generation, it displays the exact server-rendered 512 pixel result, the complete file count, the ZIP size, and copyable HTML tags. Uploaded source files are validated and deleted after processing.

How to create a complete favicon package

  1. Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP, GIF, or TIFF logo up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels. A square image at 512 by 512 pixels or larger gives the cleanest results. Animated GIF input uses its first frame. If no logo is available, leave the upload empty and enter up to four initials.
  2. Enter the website or app name used in the browser-tab preview and site.webmanifest. Choose contain to preserve the complete logo or cover to fill the icon and crop the edges.
  3. Choose rounded square, circle, square, or no mask for the browser favicon. Set the background, initials color, browser theme color, padding, corner radius, and optional transparent browser background. Controls that do not apply to the current source or shape are disabled.
  4. Inspect the large favicon, 16, 32, 48, and 96 pixel samples, browser tab, Apple touch, and circular maskable previews. The Apple and maskable outputs intentionally remain opaque, and maskable files automatically keep important artwork inside the safe zone.
  5. Select Generate Favicon Pack. The server validates the actual image format, file size, pixel count, and readability, then creates the multi-size ICO, PNG variants, platform icons, manifest, browserconfig, HTML tags, and README.
  6. Confirm the server-rendered result and included file list. Use the rating-gated Download ZIP action, upload the files to the website root, paste the provided link and meta tags inside the HTML head, and adjust root-relative paths only when the files are stored elsewhere.

Benefits of this favicon generator

  • Builds one ICO containing 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128, and 256 pixel frames for broad browser and shortcut compatibility.
  • Creates optimized browser PNGs at 16, 32, 48, 96, 128, 256, 384, and 512 pixels.
  • Produces a separate opaque 180 pixel Apple touch icon instead of applying the browser favicon mask twice.
  • Produces distinct 192 and 512 pixel any-purpose Android icons and distinct safe-zone maskable icons with correct manifest purpose values.
  • Generates site.webmanifest with id, name, short name, start URL, scope, display, colors, and platform icon declarations.
  • Shows live browser, small-size, Apple, and maskable previews plus the exact server-rendered output after generation.
  • Works without an upload through the initials fallback and uses a scalable server font on Linux instead of a tiny bitmap fallback.
  • Rejects unsupported, empty, damaged, oversized, and over-resolution files with clear messages and removes temporary uploads after processing.
  • Clears a stale ZIP whenever settings change and keeps reset, HTML copy, rating-gated download, mobile preview navigation, light mode, and dark mode synchronized.

Favicon Generator FAQ

What files are included in the favicon ZIP?

The 19-file package contains a multi-size favicon.ico, eight browser PNG sizes, apple-touch-icon.png, two Android Chrome icons, two separate maskable icons, mstile-150x150.png, site.webmanifest, browserconfig.xml, ready-to-paste HTML tags, and a README.

Can I create a favicon without uploading a logo?

Yes. Enter up to four initials and choose the background, initials color, browser shape, padding, and corner radius. On the Linux server, the generator uses a scalable bold font so the downloaded initials icon remains readable.

Why are maskable icons separate from Android Chrome icons?

A maskable icon must keep important artwork inside its safe zone because the operating system may crop the outer area into different shapes. The generator creates dedicated files and declares them with purpose maskable while ordinary Android icons use purpose any.

Why can the Apple touch icon look different from my browser favicon?

Apple home-screen rendering applies its own mask. The generator therefore exports an opaque square Apple icon and does not bake the selected browser shape or transparency into that platform file.

Which upload formats and limits are supported?

Upload PNG, JPG or JPEG, WebP, BMP, GIF, TIF, or TIFF up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels. Animated GIFs use the first frame. SVG is not accepted because this Pillow-based hosting workflow does not include a safe SVG renderer.

Does the tool create a real multi-size ICO?

Yes. favicon.ico contains 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128, and 256 pixel frames. The ZIP also includes individual PNG browser icons from 16 through 512 pixels.

Where should I place the generated files?

Upload them to the website root when using the generated paths unchanged. If the files are stored in an assets folder, update the href and src paths in the HTML tags, manifest, and browserconfig before publishing.

Are uploaded logos stored permanently?

No. The server uses a temporary upload for validation and generation and deletes it after the request succeeds or fails. Generated preview and ZIP files follow the platform output-retention process so the visitor can download them.

Why does Download disappear after I change a setting?

The previous ZIP represents older settings. Hiding that stale link prevents downloading a package that does not match the current preview. Generate again to create a synchronized ZIP.

Is SVG favicon output included?

No. A raster upload cannot be converted into a genuinely scalable SVG without tracing or embedding. The tool keeps the output truthful and generates ICO and PNG assets; use an original vector logo separately when a hand-authored SVG favicon is required.
