Real XML formatting and well-formedness validation

The formatter parses input as XML before producing output, preserving namespaces, declarations, comments, CDATA sections, processing instructions, attributes, and mixed text content.

Validation and structure inspection run in an inert in-memory XML document. Parsed nodes are never inserted into the active page, and input is never uploaded.

How to format and inspect XML

  1. Paste XML, drop a supported XML-family file, open a local file, or load an example.
  2. Choose spaces or tabs and whether to include the declaration, comments, and self-closing empty tags.
  3. Review the live well-formedness result and jump to the parser line and column when an error is reported.
  4. Switch between Formatted, Minified, and Inspect views and verify the exact displayed result.
  5. Copy or download the same output currently visible in the editor.

Safe XML formatting with useful structure analysis

  • Parse namespace-qualified elements and attributes instead of formatting tags with text substitutions.
  • Preserve meaningful text whitespace, mixed content, CDATA sections, comments, and processing instructions.
  • Inspect element, attribute, namespace, depth, line, text, comment, and CDATA counts.
  • Reject malformed XML and risky DTD entity declarations without leaving stale output visible.
  • Format XML, SVG, SOAP, RSS, Atom, XSD, XSLT, WSDL, and POM files locally up to 1 MB.

XML Formatter FAQ

Does this validate against XSD or DTD rules?

No. It checks whether XML is well formed. Schema and DTD validation require the applicable schema and a dedicated validator.

Are namespaces and mixed content preserved?

Yes. Prefixes, namespace declarations, qualified names, CDATA, and meaningful mixed-content spacing are preserved.

Why are ENTITY declarations rejected?

DTD entity expansion can consume excessive memory. This formatter refuses entity declarations and reports the limitation instead of expanding them.

Does formatting execute XML or SVG scripts?

No. XML stays in an inert parsed document and output is displayed only as plain text.

Does it upload my XML?

No. Parsing, formatting, inspection, copy, and file creation run locally in the browser.
